From Bodyworker to Multidisciplinary Therapist: A Conversation with Sami Hakala

Early beginnings

My journey began a long while ago in the world of construction. Until one day when I got tired of it and did a complete switch that lead me to start working in personal training. Training was a hobby of mine and I’ve always been doing it, martial arts among others.
And typically as someone who trains extensively, I had a lot of sports injuries. So it started with me kind of healing my physical injuries at first. Then helping others with their injuries and later moving on to mental, spiritual and emotional health.

On that journey of healing I stumbled upon other modalities as well. Which lead to this quest of trying to find ways of healing not only the body but also the mind, soul and spirit.

My journey and finding breathwork

It has been quite an interesting journey and I've been on it for almost fifteen years intensely. From yoga, to breathwork, shamanism, energy medicine, ceremonial work and more. If we are to start from the very beginning, I think we have to go back almost 25 years, when I started practicing yoga. I started with yoga mainly to encourage my girlfriend at the time to do some kind of training. I bought us tickets to an Ashtanga yoga workshop and I just fell in love with it completely. The tradition of yoga also upholds a broad spectrum of spiritual practices, one of them being pranayama which is breathwork. Pranayama is one of the longest systemized breathwork practices now known to man.

So it started there for me, and it became my own practice. It wasn’t always straight forward necessarily and I had periods of being on and off with the yoga practice, some kind of love and hate relationship for many years.

Breathwork is the new yoga

So when I started personal training, I noticed that many people had bad habits of breathing. And it got me researching and educating myself more in the therapeutic styles of breathwork and conscious breathing, wanting to help my clients manage stress. From then on the practice of breathwork has been ongoing, eventually leading me to being asked to join Hale where I now work as head teacher. I would say that breathwork is my number one spiritual practice.

The breath is quite an extraordinary and complex thing. It is basically the remote control to the nervous system. It's one of the quickest practices to stimulate the nervous system consciously. You can within minutes regulate your emotional and mental state. And it’s helping so many people regulate anxiety or stress. Breathwork is really exploding in the world and it’s one of the fastest growing health practices today. It's just everywhere. You could say that breathwork is the new yoga.

“The breath is the remote control to the nervous system. It's one of the few practices that actually stimulates the nervous system in real time and has the quickest way of doing that as well.”

Taking back our power

When studying ceremonial practices and healing, I realized that many people that are searching, gave the power of healing away to the healer. In my eyes it becomes a problem when we give our power away thinking that only someone else can help us. The healing happens within us and this is important to understand.

So why I think breathwork and sound healing is so powerful as a complementary healing tool is that it offers the gift of healing back to the person doing it. My work today is about inspiring and empowering people to learn and educate themselves so they can become their own healer, which I love. This has been my mission the past few years.

From darkness to light

This journey of mine has definitely not come without challenge or frustration.
I’ve encountered dark times and challenges many times and I think this is something that is reoccurring constantly in cycles. Some might think the spiritual path is all about love and light. But it’s mostly about walking through the challenging moments in life and transmuting things from darkness to light.

Especially since I started on my shamanic path over ten years ago, I’ve encountered many occasions where I wanted to just stop and go back to normal life. I had to sacrifice a lot of things before I could understand what these practices really are and teach. In my case it took about eight years of studying and practicing rituals and ceremonies before I understood what I was doing. These traditions are often handed down through generations where you walk beside your teacher and elder as an apprentice for many many years. It’s seldom that someone comes in from the outside and learns these practices and technologies in a year or two.

Ancient practices and traditions

And when it comes to traditions and ancient practices, we can see so many similarities. They basically stem from the same message and are presented in different formats, different interpretations of it. But in the end I think they all come from the same source, whether it’s religions, eastern philosophies, old philosophies, etc.

A longing for change

The world is in a period of rapid transformation and I see a growing appetite for spiritual awakening and collective evolution. I believe we are in a pivotal moment in human history, where consciousness is shifting towards a higher vibration and understanding of interconnectedness.

Like there’s a longing within us for the consciousness to change, I think. A longing to get back to nature, natural reality and being relational again. Moving away from sitting staring into our phones and being in a make belief world of instant gratification.

And the process of this consciousness shift is going faster and faster as time is escalating. That’s what I’m seeing, it’s almost like a snowball effect that is rolling faster and the bigger it gets, it is pulling everyone with it. It’s such a massive difference now if I look back ten or fifteen years, and especially after covid in 2020.

Looking to the future

I dream and envision a new world rising into heightened awareness and expansive vision for the greater good of all beings.

There’s so many people these days that are so stressed and burning out. I’m also one of those that has gone through this. And if we look at mental health studies today, they’re all pointing towards the same direction. It’s getting worse and worse and I think it’s related to the fact that we are losing the connection both to ourselves, our inherent dreams but also losing a deeper connection with others.

It feels as if our soul is longing for meaning and not buying the fake world that we’re being presented anymore. Sitting plastered in front of our devices that were initially supposed to help us, but that are now making us feel physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted. We need to feel the energy of being alive again, to dance, breathe, laugh and have fun together.

This is what I dream of and want to share with the world, and a little something written about it.

The call

From the East,
Where the sun rises, signaling new beginnings.
We invoke and call upon the radiance of a new Earth's nation to ascend, uniting us as one people and one planet. Rising into heightened awareness and expansive vision for the collective good of all beings, seen and unseen. So be and so it is.

From the South,
The highest place of the sun, casting its equal glow on us, across all realms and all kingdoms.
We summon the light of unconditional love and compassion to stir in our hearts, illuminating our thoughts, words, and actions with joy, ease, and grace, fostering the healing of humankind. So be it and so it is.

From the West,
Where the sun sets, embracing inner vision.
Through contemplation, we call upon the inner light to attune and harmonize with the source within, recognizing our innate potential and remembering our divine essence. So be it and so it is.

From the North,
The realm of the night sky portal, where celestial light bleeds through the dimensional gateways off the stars.
We entreat the light, wisdom, and fortitude of our forefathers who walked this earth before us, serving as a reminder that we too, will become ancestors to our children’s children. Thus, we assume the mantle of genuine guardianship for our sacred Mother Earth, preserving life's essentials for future generations. So be it and so it is.

From Beneath,
We invoke the light of life, nurturing and safeguarding this sacred Mother Earth, generously and graciously lending us her earthly robe, allowing us to witness her beauty, feel her pulsating rhythm, hear her songs, savor her fragrance, taste her delights, and touch her in a sacred manner. Collaborating to shape a new Earth, abundant in good health and prosperity for all beings across the realms of earth, water, fire, air, and ether. So be it and so it is.

From Above,
We summon the light of the creator and great mystery, the expansive consciousness unfolding in myriad forms and emanations.
Through our alignment with the highest within us, recognizing the divine essence in every sentient being, we awaken to the profound truth that we are all interconnected as one. So be it and so it is.

And from Within,
We call upon the inherent light within us to awaken the light in others.
Embarking now, in this very moment, into the love that defines our essence. Reclaiming the sovereign throne of our hearts as stewards of our lives, aligned with the source within, above, below, and around us, fulfilling our authentic purpose for the greater good. From this moment forward, we are called upon to uphold the sacred laws and universal principles, embracing love and respect for all living beings across all realms and times. So be it and so it is.
